Daily 5 Fun!

The students are doing a really great job with using resources around the room to spell words and sound out tricky words.  During Daily 5 I have been seeing a lot of inventive spelling with some tricky words by sounding out the letters!  The students enjoy reading to one another, finding a unique spot to read to themselves and listen to reading is popular.
Overall, the students are loving Daily 5 and are doing a great job!
Hope you enjoy!

Sci-Fri Oobleck Experiment

We made Oobleck during Sci-Fri! It was such a fun experiment and cool to watch the Non-Newtonian fluid become a liquid and a solid.

Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid. That is, it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands.
The students thought this was great!

TRY IT AT HOME!

Start with 1 1/2 cups of cornstarch (the more cornstarch the thicker the Oobleck-your choice!) and then add 1 cup of water. You can always add color with some food coloring as well!

Acting out Snowmen at Night

We read the story Snowmen at Night then we made snowmen masks and acted the story out. In the story, the little boy wonders what snowmen do at night when we are all asleep. He imagines them doing all sorts of fun things like sledding, sipping cold cocoa, having a snowball fight and more. They had a lot of fun acting this story out! We will be uploading the video soon!

Sci-Fri Lava Lamps

We made home made lava lamps during Sci-Fri! It was such a fun experiment and very cool to watch. Try it at home! Start with 3/4 of a jar of oil. Add some water to the top and watch the water sink to the bottom.

Add food coloring to the mixture. Then add some broken up pieces of Alka-Seltzer.
And watch the magic happen! It really looks like a lava lamp as the Alka-Selzer mixes with the oil and water and food coloring.
It only lasts until the Alka-Seltzer dissolves where we then added a different food coloring and more Alka-Seltzer. We also tried to do it in bigger chunks of the Alka-Seltzer to see how it differed. We liked it better with little bits because it created more "lava".

 Love the concentration!!
 They were SO into this!
